Homework supervision
Background
The appropriate amount of homework for any given age is debatable. What is certain is that some homework is advisable. Homework can range from simple reading tasks for reception children to more complex tasks and research for older students.
How much homework is enough
As a general guide, adequate homework for the various year levels is as follows, though there may be some individual variation.
R -2 about 10-30 minutes most days, and this will involve mainly reading.
Yr 3-7 about 30-60 minutes most days, and this can range from the simple practice of basic skills covered in class to more complicated research projects.
Yr 8-10 about 60-120 min. most week nights, depending on the circumstances.
Yr 11-12 about 100-150 min. at least 5 nights/week, plus 1 or 2 sessions on the weekend.
Who might benefit from the Homework Supervision Program
Students from R-12 can take advantage of the structured environment and professional assistance provided by the Homework Supervision Program.
Homework Supervision at the International Academy of Education
The International Academy of Education provides a suitable venue for students of all ages to come and quietly do their homework while other family commitments are being met. The aim is to provide a flexible service for families so that students can complete their necessary work with supervision and assistance when required in an atmosphere conducive to learning. Parents can also achieve what is necessary in the few hours after school before home time knowing their children are being responsibly supervised.
This program may provide a good alternative to after-school care, a nanny or a parent with numerous after-school obligations, as the student will be supervised and either completing school requirements or engaged in cognitive activities provided by the centre.
Sessions
Sessions will start from 4:00pm and the last session will finish at 7:00 pm.
Sessions for R-2 children are limited to one hour, with educational games, mathematical activities and literacy as the main focus, unless specific tasks are requested for individual students by their schools or parents.
Sessions for older children vary between 1 and 2.5 hours depending on a family’s requirements.
Supervision occurs in groups of between 2 and 10 students.
Students sign in and sign out as they come and go but must come in or out on the hour or half hour to minimise disruption to other students.
During tuition
Students are taught to use a homework diary, and are asked to keep one up-to-date.
Students undertake their assigned homework activities or engage in activities provided by the centre.
A qualified teacher provides supervision and assistance when necessary during these sessions.
