Year 7-8 transition program
Literacy, numeracy, thinking, reasoning & problem-solving
Background
It is widely recognised that the entry of students into Year 8 is often a very stressful experience, not only emotionally but also conceptually. If a strong foundation has not been laid in earlier years, students will often start to flounder as the gaps in their learning and understanding become apparent and increasingly more difficult to repair.
Who might undertake the Year 7-8 Transition Program
Any student in Year 7 who wishes to lay a solid foundation for Year 8 entry.
The Year 7-8 Transition Program at the International Academy of Education
The Year 7-8 Transition Program has been established to try to redress emerging problems in students’ conceptual development. It will identify the strengths, weaknesses and the gaps in students’ knowledge, skills and experience. A program will then be formulated to develop, consolidate and expand students’ knowledge and skills in literacy, numeracy and problem-solving through an approach incorporating the use of the fundamentals of thinking, reasoning, learning and problem-solving. In doing so, a strong foundation will be laid in preparation for Year 8 studies.

The viability of small group classes will ultimately depend on student and staff availability.
Individual tuition is also possible and may even be more appropriate, depending on a student’s needs. The timing of individual sessions can be negotiated.

In the literacy component, materials have been developed focussing on the four main activities in communication:
 |
